In our 2nd grade class, we learn about life cycles, with an emphasis on the Monarch Butterfly. These primary sources will help students learn more about the Monarch, its migration and habitat. To begin, we can "zoom in" on a few pictures and brainstorm ideas. What is being shown? What do you see, think, feel as you look at the image? What is happening? Why is this important? What title would fit this picture? Why? After doing an activity like this in a large group, small groups will get their own photograph to examine. They will share their thinking and picture with the class. Later on, we will utilize other resources in small groups where each group can choose 1 or 2 resources to closely examine and create a poster to "teach" the class. These activities will build communication, cooperation and oral speaking skills. The students will be able to work together to create a classroom "museum" featuring the primary resources and their team posters. These activities will bring history and Monarch to life for the children in my class as well as the other children who come to visit and view our projects. Pre K - 2 Science Monarch Butterfly
I love this project and wonder how you located so many applicable images! Last year, I made a pollinator garden poster for the WPA poster class and I'm continuing to let people know that our lawn deserts need to be reduced by adding native plants and reducing aggressive non-natives so we can sustain our bird-bug-food-human relationship.
