These pictures help students understand the time period of the book "Ruth and the Green Book" by Calvin Alexander Ramsey and Gwenn Strauss

This book was written in 2013 about the 1950s.

In this story an African American girl travels with her family from Chicago to Alabama.  During their travels they use "The Negro Motorist Green Book" which was a book that helped African Americans find businesses across the country that would allow them to come (restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc) in an era of segregation. 3 - 5 Social Studies/History English/Language Arts

Notes: -  Summary: Gwendolyn Patton discusses attending the Tuskegee Institute, where she became involved in many civil rights organizations and was elected student body president. She recalls hosting the Freedom Riders in 1961, and spending a year in a segregated sanitarium when she had tuberculosis. She recounts organizing Tuskegee students for the Selma to Montgomery March, occupying the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, and registering voters in Lowndes County.
-  Biographical History: Gwendolyn Patton was born 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Tuskegee University, Antioch College, Union Graduate School, and Interdenominational Institute of Theology. Patton was a civil rights activist and archivist.
-  Acquisition Note: The Civil Rights History Project is a joint project of the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture to collect video and audio recordings of personal histories and testimonials of individuals who participated in the Civil Rights movement.
