The captured flags in the O

Teaching Notes

Older students could search loc.gov for capture the flag to extend their learning to the symbolic importance of capturing flags from enemy troops. This particular example is a drawing made during the Civil War, and if I understand the description correctly, these rebel flags had been captured and then displayed in the "Old Hall of Representatives" in honor of George Washington's birthday.

Another idea would be to incorporate student drawings of flags into the lesson. The flag below was drawn by an elementary student in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
