Virtual Visits & Exposition - W.E.B. Du Bois

Album Description

For the 1919 Paris Exposition, W.E.B. Du Bois was asked to curate an exhibit representing Black life in America one generation after emancipation. His award winning exhibit was the multimedia of its time.

It not only showcased literature, writings and pamphlets by Black authors, but also through powerful and uniquely designed data visualization he outlined the disparity and impact caused by the lack of equal opportunity for Black Americans.

And most powerfully Du Bois also sought to fight prevalent negative stereotypes  through photographs. He compiled 500 photographs that showed the pride and accomplishments of Black Americans despite segregation and inequality of opportunity.

Students can build virtual exhibits from primary sources located in the Library of Congress by selecting favorites or those that speak to them from the wealth of resources on a given topic. By creating and sharing their digital exhibits they can help broaden our perspective on our story of the American experience.

As an example here are a few favorite portraits from the W.E.B. Du BOIS exhibit included in my virtual study of portraits.  The example was build by using theLOC Mobile App to select favorites from the collection ofAfrican American Photographs Assembled for 1900 Paris Exposition and then adding each link to an album.  From there, the collected primary sources were added to a Keynote slide presentation to emulate a virtual visit. Then exported as a movie to share.

Resilient Faces of Black History

Teaching Notes

Working out of the Albums in the TPS Teachers Network is an easy way to curate primary sources for a future project. This link is to an epub published in Apple Books as a sampler for teachers on how they might have students use collage techniques when working with portraits or family group photos from the past or even those they photograph today.

Coming back to this Album and reviewing the selection inspired me to re-message it for Black History Month trying another online format. Today’s students have the tools to publish and share their work either through blogs, slides, movies, Spark, epub format or more. They can take the primary sources that inspire them and use the knowledge they’ve gained through research to creatively publish a message.
