Album Description
I often use the book "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin with my elementary students.
This text is used in the "Jacob's Ladder" critical and creative thinking curriculum. The focus of the thinking prompts is generally persistence and creativity - I also combine this line of thought with a science focus on different states of matter, the water cycle and sometimes an examination of Fractals in nature and sometimes repeating patterns (with pictures for younger children). When I use this book I work with groups of mixed ages children - either grades 1 to 3 or grades 4 and 5 - so I change the focus accordingly.
I found out that the LOC has a collection of the amazing images made by Theodor Horydczak who also took extraordinary photographs of snowflakes (and other subjects) - I included several of them as images in this album.

Teaching Notes
I like this image as it shows Horydczak's camera - it's bulk specifically. I think it's great to take a look at his camera and compare it to the camera that Bentley used (also massive) and then think about how we can make images today.

Teaching Notes
This is an amazing reference guide - I know it's not an image - but I want to include it in this album as there are great resources in it to help students expand on their explorations if they are interested.
Teaching Notes
Just to give students an idea of the Vermont of Bentley's time.
