In late fall we do a unit on hibernation. As a culmination of our unit we have the children bring in a "teddy bear" and we have a hibernation celebration. The bears are placed in a cave (a large box) and allowed to sleep until the spring.
For a bit of added interest, I thought it would be fun to explore how our cuddly stuffed bears came to be named Teddy.
I am including the original cartoon depicting the story of how Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear while on a hunting trip. This led to the popularity of stuffed bears which were then called the Teddy bear. We can discuss the growing demand of Teddy Bears over other toys. I am also including an illustration from The Roosevelt Bears along with an excerpt from a poem in the publication. I could use this in a language arts lesson and discuss rhyming words (integrating our content areas).
