Hitchhiking Through the Guide

Album Description

This album will have backdrop images that relate to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.  I already tie-in Douglas Adams where I can in the science courses I teach, mostly random quotes or a wonky question for #42 on tests.  I have often considered including the book in one of my classes as a cross-discipline activity.

The images highlight a fact about the novel or provide an image for a particular chapter of the book.

The lesson would be a nine-weeks project leading into the study of astronomy.  9 - 12   Science   English/Language Arts   Library   bestof

Capitol Radio Engineering Institute. Man at radio broadcast set-up at Capitol Radio Engineering Institute

Teaching Notes

This image of a man at a radio broadcast set-up would be used to introduce the book because the book began as a BBC radio broadcast.  Examples of the radio show could be added as an audio portion to accompany the image.

Planiglobii terrestris cum utroq hemisphærio cælesti generalis repræsentatio.

Teaching Notes

I chose this representation of Earth to use in the backdrop because it includes navigational star charts.  The image connects Earth to the greater galaxy, and the Universe at large.

New and improved map of England and Wales : including the principal part of Scotland : whereon are carefully delineated all the mail and turnpike roads direct and cross : with the various alterations & improvements ... in any other map

Teaching Notes

This image would be used to establish the setting of the beginning of the book.  This image also includes mail and turnpike roads, this ties into the destruction of Arthur's house and the Earth as well because both were destroyed to create bypasses.  I thought it would be a neat inclusion.

Hitchhiker at city limits of Waco, Texas

Teaching Notes

This image ties in with the hitchhiking theme of the book.  The timeframe during the creation of the intellectual property will need to be discussed.  Hitchhiking was more common when people didn't have automobiles.  Of course, a safety lesson would need to be included in how hitchhiking has changed.

Drawing on truck windshield stating "no hitchhiking" allowed, San Juan, Texas

Teaching Notes

This image would be used to draw a comparison to the Vogons and their views on not picking up hitchhikers.  Plus, I thought it was a neat image when I stumbled across it.  I didn't know of these before.

[Trick photograph of man with two heads]

Teaching Notes

The character Zaphod is a two-headed being.  This image is not of a two-headed human, but it does give the image of what a two-headed being could look like.  A concept that painted Adams into a creative corner on one or two occassions.
