History & Heritage, Joy & Humanity - Gordon Parks Photographs

Album Description

This album is based around a wonderful interview of Antonio Austin in the Library of Congress Picture This Prints & Photos blogMr. Austin has been serving as an Archives, History and Heritage Advanced Virtual intern. “recommending ways to bring historical material to a larger audience in innovative ways”.  This work is part of a new initiative Of the People: Widening the Path by the Library of Congress.

Of the People: Widening the Path, creates new opportunities for more Americans to engage with the Library and add their perspectives to the Library’s collections, allowing the national library to share a more inclusive American story. This work will expand the Library’s efforts to ensure that a diversity of experiences is reflected in our historical record and inform how we use those materials to understand our past”. (See About in the Of the People Widening the Path blog)

Antonio Austin reminds us of the importance of History and Heritage.  In his internship he worked with two collections W.E.B. Du Bois Paris Exposition and Gordon Park’s Farm Security Administration photographs. He compares the photographers and their times.

Having already included the Du Bois collection in this TPS Network Album I was inspired to take a closer look at the Gordon Park’s photographs. Students may be familiar with Park’s famous photo American Gothic but the breath and depth of his photography in the Library shows so much more.

Antonio Austin says about Park’s work:

Oftentimes when speaking of Black people’s experiences throughout United States history, there is a focus on resilience and overcoming adversities, without acknowledging the humanity of these individuals within the historical narrative. When browsing these images, I was really struck by the images that reflect Black joy...”

Students can be encouraged to search the Gordon Parks collection and select photographs that tell a story, then share what that story means to them.

Questions:

  • How can we get more students involved in interfacing with primary sources of underrepresented populations?
  • What connection to content can be made in middle and high school to the study of these photos? How would you bring these images (and this time) into your curriculum or library?
  • On the role of the Farm Security Administration - the intent was to document the devastation of the depression on farmers.  What else do these photographs show about the intent of the photographers?
