About this Place - Black History - Black Health & Wellness

Album Description

Thanks to   Robert Scarlett's  TPS Teachers Network post and   Bianca Woodard's participation in creating the Black History Month Creative Challenge, I was inspired to highlight for teachers the National theme of 2022 Black History Month - Black Health and Wellness by featuring an important place in my family's history.

This lessons idea, integrating technology, geography and design is a sample on how we might help students learn, create and tell a story using the model of map guides.

During the 1940s the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information photographed Provident, highlighting health services at a time when segregation and discrimination denied many African Americans hospitalization and health care. Provident Hospital served the South Side of Chicago before, during and after the Great Migration. The hospital, opened in 1891, was the first Black owned hospital in the U.S. and the first and only Black nurses school in the country. Provident became a beacon of hope for those in need of hospital health services and a tribute to Black heath heroes who wished to serve.

The Library of Congress holds a wealth of these photographs.  This Album is a small collection of those images that can be used to create a lesson on the history of health and wellness.

Beyond any specific technical directions (or types of devices), having students research, design, create and share what they have learned goes a long way in helping them relate to history and geography (and practice writing, technology and design skills).  As students select their location and research a story, their designs will add to their understanding of history.

The TPS Teachers Network Album Tool is a wonderful way to keep a record of research as we create lessons for learners and as we celebrate the heroes of Black Health Care all year long.  Black History Month   Health & Wellness   Provident Hospital
