Advisory: Due to the historic nature of the subject matter, this resource contains terms that may be considered outdated, offensive, or derogatory.

School segregation is typically associated with the former Confederate States of America but was also required by state law in the "border states" of West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware until the Brown v Board of Education decision in 1954.

To my knowledge, this is the first attempt to create a map of former segregated schools in West Virginia. I only included public elementary and high schools. Private schools and institutions of higher learning were not included.

The map does not include every segregated school known to exist in West Virginia. The precise address or location of a segregated school was lost or "scrubbed" from the record in some cases.
