August 6, 2021 was the 56th Anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. With voting rights laws part of today’s national discussions, taking students on a research journey of the 1965 law is a good start of school activity for government, history or with current events. Added to this album are several new images and a epub book (linked as a pdf) that combines the historic images with the text of the law.
An interesting current news addition is the photo of Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of President Johnson, at the signing (she was 18 at the time) and now is campaigning for voter’s rights “taking up her father’s cause” (CBS News)
A good lesson idea on connecting this to the American Revolution is in the TPS Teachers Network Group American Revolution: 1763- 1791. Journalism in Action: The American Revolution and Early Republic
