The amazing interactive map linked here is color coded by Midwest, Northeast, South, and West. Students can also select any state from the Highlight State box. Because the data is displayed by county rather than city, students could also research why some counties have such large populations. For example, why are Cook County (Midwest) and Maricopa County (West) numbers so large?
I would use this map as a question starter for discussions on the electoral college. Why are some politicians today so adamantly opposed to eliminating the electoral college, whereas others are equally supportive of changing to presidential selection by popular vote only? Who stands to win or lose?
The Library of Congress has lots of primary sources related to the contentious history of the electoral college to help complete the picture.
