I appreciated having a modified version of the Douglass Speech. It's can be hard to use primary documents such as this with elementary students, but we don't want them to miss out on them as they are so valuable to building better understanding. My students definitely left the end of this last lesson in the series of three with a deeper understanding of why the 4th of July is celebrated, and also why some may not be comfortable with the holiday. When we finished the lesson we had some extra time and I showed this video of James Earl Jones reading Douglass' speech. Some of the kids enjoyed it but others became bored. It would probably be better suited as a supplement when teaching this mystery to a group of 5th graders rather than 3rd graders.
