Many of the books on this list could be paired with primary sources from the Library of Congress. Most of the titles would be categorized as young adult or adult in content. I was thinking that a high school library might do a state-focused display with these titles and primary sources combined.

Thank you,  Mary Johnson , for suggesting this excellent library display idea.

In the case of my state of Michigan, the recommended title of Middlesex (which references the Detroit Riots of 1967) resulted in some interesting Library of Congress materials about an earlier race riot.  A 1942 photograph, for example, documents a riot at the Sojourner Truth homes, a new U.S. federal housing project in Detroit.
