The Smithsonian partnered with photographer Drew Gardner to photograph descendants of famous Americans alongside their descendants. It's truly a moving collection of images.
Thomas Jefferson descendant Shannon LaNier has been linked to Jefferson through Sally Hemmings. How might this pair of images help students of color see themselves in American history? As a child growing up across the river from Jefferson's monument on the Potomac, I would have seen history in a more complete light!
