During the Library's upcoming Webinar on October 7 at 7:00 pm ET, we'll discuss teaching ideas around the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Here's the full description:

"The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the conditions that led to it and its decades-long legacy are the subjects of a powerful new teaching resource from the Library of Congress and HISTORY®, part of the Idea Book for Educators series titled “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: A Long Struggle for Freedom.”

Inspired by the Library of Congress exhibition of the same name, the Idea Book presents dozens of unique primary sources from the Library’s collections that illuminate the unjust laws and practices that preceded the act. This webinar will discuss teaching ideas that allow educators to prompt critical analysis and informed debate by their students around the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

We hope you'll join us and/or pass the word along to colleagues.  To find out more and join us in the Webinar, visit http://loc.gov/teachers/professionaldevelopment/webinar/webinars-2014.html

I was unable to attend the first Webinar on analyzing visual images, but I've listened to the recording conveniently provided by the Ed Outreach folks. I'd like to encourage all members of the TPS Teachers Network to check out the October 7th Webinar about the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and all future Webinars, for that matter. Whether you need a refresher or the topic is mostly new to you, you'll appreciate the high quality of these Webinars, and so will your colleagues. Thank you for sharing the information and the Webinar links in your post, Anne!
I missed the original webinar but certainly enjoyed the recording! It is a worthwhile listen as all the slides are linked to the resources so it is very easy to access the materials for later use. The webinars starts with a wonderful modeling for teachers of photo analysis of a Civil Rights image guided by Cheryl Lederle. Then at 31:32 Stacie Moats takes us through the Ciivil Rights Act online exhibit, http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/civil-rights-act/ gives some valuable pointers on using the site, and shares some amazing stories about some of the objects. The story of the comic book was new to me. Not having seen the exhibit myself, hearing about it from Stacie and being guided through the online exhibit was most helpful! I also appreciated her tip about the exhibit Learn More page. Thanks to all at Ed Outreach for putting this together! It really was an informative hour.
