Hello New York State Group friends!

I saw that Miss Liberty was put up as the selection to be the image for this group, and I have a couple of concerns.  The first was that the image reminds me more of immigration and its location in New York harbor, rather than the whole state.  If this is to be a group to connect participants from around the entire state, perhaps we should keep exploring images that would signify a wider representation.   Yes, we are a nation of immigrants - but not all of us.  Consider our citizens of native american heritage.  Secondly, I notice that there is another public group with the Statue of Liberty as their icon:  the TPS Eastern Region group.  As I prepare to introduce new users to the Network, I noticed the duplication and wondered if it might not be confusing to visually oriented new users.  What do others think?

    Hi Cathi,

Glad you joined the group! We struggled with an avatar for the group since New York represents so many things to so many people. Julie and I settled on the Statue in part because it is most readily identified with New York State, not just the city - I live in the far western part of NY and still connect to the Statue as a New Yorker. I also understand your concern for the First People - and the issue of representing only immigrants - but in a way, it seems that Liberty stands for any person who is in need of refuge (the poem instills this) - regardless of who they are or origin...so in that sense we felt it represented all groups who are establishing their rights to liberty.

And after all, it is only an avatar! What we do as a group I think will be more important and I appreciate your Erie Canal album! We will shortly be putting up an online exhibition on the Erie Canal (through the Empire State Library Network) on the dpla site but I will link to it from here since it does also include many images from the Library of Congress. And for anyone else reading this, we have a traveling component to the exhibtion as well - a set of four posters and an ipad on a stand with the online narrative - it can be sent to any New York library or cultural organization on request - though I think it has some stops lined up already!

Looking forward to posting of the Link to the Exhibition.

Perhaps the map image of the state would be acceptable. Maybe the state flag?

I added images that were uniquely NY and was not thinking of an image to represent the group as a whole. Perhaps I misunderstood as I was aiming for historical references and narratives. No one would want to be Marcy "Boss" Tweed but he is very NYC, so I added his portrait as a note in history. Feel free to remove my additions which are not intended to be controversial.  As a footnote to Boss Tweed, the NYC Dept. of Education has its administrative center in a building we all call Tweed.  Imagine having an city education building synonymous with corruption (lol) but there you have it. One can't make this stuff up.
