I am looking for ideas for the book Blood on The River, about Jamestown. I found some great sources in the network, but I am stuck on what do I should do with 4th graders reading this book. Our curriculum says this book is for fourth grade. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.  3 - 5    English/Language Arts

Here is a possible resource  from San Antonio ISD. Your students are truly fortunate,  Cheryl Best , to have your guidance and support while studying this challenging topic!

Thank you for this tip! I know this will definitely help them understand the topic better! Keeping this one.

The Library of Congress has a Resource Guide on "Jamestown and Roanoke Colonies" that might be useful, although as you noted, the links are more about resources than teaching strategies. The link to Especially for K-12 Students & Teachers page has a list of non-fiction and fiction books for young people. I wonder how many of these titles can be found in our school libraries. One of the books listed is Blood on the River.

Also included in the Resource Guide is a link to the Colonial Settlement, 1600s - 1763 section of the U.S. History Primary Source Timeline. There's an especially helpful page on Virginia's Early Relations with Native Americans

I used this with my 7 &8 graders. They really came away with a better understanding of the positives and the negatives of exploration. Great post by the way!
