I was looking at this Ivory hornbook found in the Library of Congress, and discovered some fascinating facts that I think children would love to discover.

Using the I see, I think, I wonder approach to analysis, the younger set could examine the source and make some discoveries. I wonder how long it would take them to notice the extra letter. What is that extra letter? Why is it there? What was its purpose? How did the alphabet begin? Why did it begin? Why do we study the alphabet? Why do we need to understand and use it? It may just be ABC’s, but the study of the Alphabet could make for some wonderfully rich study and discussion for all grade levels.

I hope you can find that studying the letters and the history of our English alphabet fun and a great way to begin a new school year of discoveries.
