As of today, the Barbie Movie has grossed 1.5 billion dollars Worldwide. That is a lot of influence. Using the toy Barbie as an example, I am having my 7&8 graders look at how “things” influence the world. We seem to always have kids do reports on people, inventions, or events but what about things? Things like: TV, computer, cell phones, movies, websites, music, games and even toys. I think this will allow the students to consider how and why things influence mankind. I want them to think about the good and the bad of the influence and what makes the thing such an influence. I am hopeful that using this essential question will provide more research and more engagement.
