Lighthouses have played an important role in our nation's history. What are some resources that you use to teach young learners about lighthouses?

    Lighthouses and Our Nation
This new K-5 episode from KidCitizen dives into the history of lighthouses in the United States. Using fascinating historical documents from the Library of Congress, students explore the importance of the 1789 Lighthouse Act—one of the first laws passed by Congress—and the key role lighthouses and their keepers played in ensuring safe navigation. https://www.kidcitizen.net/episodes-blog/lighthouses

This is a great Library of Congress blog post about the St. Augustine Lighthouse https://blogs.loc.gov/law/2013/04/st-augustine-lighthouse-pic-of-the-week/

Sally Snowman retired as the keeper of Boston Light at the end of 2023. With all lighthouses now automated, she was the last Coast Guard lighthouse keeper in America.

Free to Use and Reuse: Lighthouses

The Library of Congress has a primary source set Free to Use and Reuse: Lighthouses. This is a great resource to support teachers in creating a gallery walk to introduce young children to lighthouses.

One of my favorite books to use to teach young learners about lighthouses is by author Sophie Blackall.

The book is titled Hello Lighthouse https://www.sophieblackall.com/books/hello-lighthouse.

California’s Tallest Lighthouse Gets A Facelift

This year, Pigeon Point — the unmissable beacon off Highway 1 in San Mateo County – kicked off a $16 million restoration project that, once complete, will allow visitors inside for the first time in two decades. KRON4 News took a trip 50 miles south of San Francisco – to see how the repairs are going. https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/californias-tallest-lighthouse-gets-a-facelift/ (11.14.2024)
