Summer is quickly ending, and school is just around the corner. Why not have students consider what attracts them to a place while looking at roadside attractions throughout the United States. Consider paring this study with primary sources and a beautiful excerpt form a novel such as Swamplandia by Karen Russell. The story may be too much for elementary readers, but the author does provide a wonderful picture of a family with a roadside attraction that gets students thinking about their own vacations as well as ways authors  paint a picture of a place and people with their words.  Remember you don’t have to read all a book to gain important reading skills. Attached are some great resources that will create some great lessons. Can you think of some more to add to these lessons?
