In the Disability History group, Rich Cairn shared this helpful tip sheet for using the QFT with special student populations:

In the document, the Right Question Institute has "gathered tips, insights, and ideas from educators across the country who are using the QFT with special populations, including English language learners, early elementary students, and students who receive special education services." I find the suggestions to be highly practical and doable, especially because they come from practicing teachers.
Five stars!

Thank you for this excellent compilation. I once worked with the Special Day Class in the high school where I was the librarian. Each 1-2 students had an Aide. The project theme was 'memorials'. We used the Vietnam Memorial as the Q-focus, showing 4 slides about the war and 1 of the memorial. We used the LOC analysis tool to elicit observations verbally as a class. Then each student worked with their Aide to write a list of reflections about what they saw. We shared out those and the teacher wrote several statements on the board. The QFT was somewhat a mashup with the analysis form and all questions were posted on the board. Students took those questions and created their own lists of answers to their questions. A week or so later we shared out those lists and each student created their own list of their favorite words that described what they thought about the memorial, the war... their findings. With those they each made their own 'word cloud'. From there, they made "six-word poems". They were awesome. The process was longer, broken down into smaller time segments, but they did the whole thing and ended up with insightful poems. Some ended up writing poems that were far beyond the assignment of 'six words'.
Here is a Google doc with my memories of the lesson, plus details about how I set it up and how I collaborated with a local museum. Below is a photograph of the Vietnam War Memorial, followed by some examples of student work.
