During the Mississippian Period, distinct styles of gorgets (an article of clothing that covered the throat) emerged among the Cherokees. A popular style was the rattlesnake motif as shown here. The rattlesnake led the struggle against the “power above” the land animals and the birds. It appeared in Cherokee stories like, “The Rattlesnake’s Revenge,” in which a hunter is forced to sacrifice his wife because she killed their chief, the Yellow Rattlesnake. In return, the Cherokees received a song which, when sung, kept rattlesnakes from biting them.
