This book is book about John Smith (1580-1631). He was instrumental in the settling of first permanent English colony of Jamestown. He was involved with the Virginia Company to come to this land. This book tells about him; the explorer, the sailor, the soldier, the slave, and the president of the council for the colony.
This is a good book to have the students read as a book club or as a read aloud to get the students involved in the history of Jamestown and those instrumental in settlement of the new land. At this point, it is a good and easy segue to the history of John Smith and how he was so instrumental in the Chesapeake Bay exploration for science.
