This lesson plan is about the Inventions from the 1800's in which students learn about in school.

The student will understand the importance of various inventions from the 1800’s - including what they were, who invented them, and why it is important to understand the historical perspective.

This lesson is used in American History, Language Arts, and Science. Grades 3-8.

     Procedures:

    1. Pre-assessment. Access prior knowledge by asking students to brainstorm 10 inventions that are important to us today.  Ask them why it is important and how it is used in our society.  Ask if they know why it was invented.
    1. Look at each Library of Congress image and the description of what the image is, who invented it, when it was invented, and discuss why it was invented and how it was important.
    1. Students will use the “Notes” page to start researching information about the invention each student chose.

*Note:  If there is an invention that the student wishes to research that applies to the time-frame and lessons, they may ask the teacher if they may use their chosen invention and research it.

         4.  Assessment.  There are two assessments used for this activity.  The first one is a written summary from the notes each student took about their chosen inventions and inventors.  The second assessment is an advertisement poster about the invention and inventor.

    1. Students will turn in their “Notes” and "Written Summary" paragraph to the teacher and present the advertisement poster to the class with explanations about the content of their poster.
