If you are reading this, there’s a high probability you joined the TPS Teachers Network after experiencing some type of TPS professional development. When educators first begin to explore the Library of Congress website and learn a little about primary source inquiry and teaching strategies, they often leave TPS events with one wish - “We want more!”
The Library of Congress TPS program offers professional development and materials created to help K-12 teachers use primary sources to engage students and build their content knowledge, while developing their critical thinking and analysis skills. Throughout each year, the Library’s Educational Outreach Office, along with its institutional partners and grantees, conducts TPS presentations, workshops, and institutes, as well as face-to-face and online courses for teachers from across the country.
Beginning this month, Network users can learn about TPS events taking place, both near and far, from a calendar embedded in the right column of the homepage. We hope this information will prompt you to consider participating in a nearby workshop, sitting in on a TPS presentation at an education conference, enrolling in an online course offered by one of our partners, or applying to attend one of the Library’s summer teacher institutes in Washington, DC.
To view the current calendar month, simply click on the VIEW FULL SIZE box below it. Whether viewing the calendar at full size or from the homescreen, you can use the arrow icons to scroll through month by month.
For an example of an online TPS event that lasts over several weeks, use the arrows to navigate to March 15th and then click on “Emerging America: Immigration Issues in Perspective for Diverse Students.” You will see a pop-up (pictured below) of a course offered by the Collaborative for Educational Services in western Massachusetts, a TPS Partner.
If you click on more details>> below the pop-up, you’ll reach a screen with a full description, contact information, and a registration link.
TPS Consortium members, TPS Regional Grantees, and Library of Congress staff will be submitting information about upcoming TPS events. Network staff will add new events to the calendar as we receive them, so please keep checking back for the latest offerings.
As the calendar fills with upcoming TPS events and professional development opportunities available to you, we hope you will find something just right for you, from refresher presentations at conferences to in-depth courses on a topic of interest. Through the calendar, we also think our users will gain a broader appreciation of the TPS program and of the many enthusiastic professionals who spread the message about the power of teaching with Library of Congress primary sources every single day!
