    The 4th-grade teacher at my school and I collaborated together to have students create an iMovie presentation about immigration during the 20th century. Each student wrote a story about their own specific immigrant and a portion of their story, along with the student's artwork and music, was put into iMovie. Click here to see one student's project.

    Students were taught how to search The Library of Congress and were asked to find and listen to recordings from their immigrant’s country and time period. Students then shared their favorite songs or recordings with others in the class and articulated why they liked the songs they chose, whether it was a particular instrument, melody, lyrics or style of music that spoke to them. Students learned about the impact of music on immigrants and the contributions of music from other countries to American music.

    Students were also asked to look up photos of people from their immigrant’s country and the time period and create drawings in ibis Paint X of their immigrants based on the style of clothing they observed. Students used GarageBand to create music for a background to their story, using instruments from their country (or similar instruments) found in GarageBand, imitating the style of music that they heard. The final project was put into iMovie and was shared on Grandfriends’ Day at our school.

    What a creative integration of primary sources, music, art, research, writing and media production with an immigration lesson! The video you linked is private so we can’t see it but the process of learning that went into making the video is what is important. I always find that when students are involved with a multifaceted learning experience that winds up with a share to a broader audience (like their Grandfriends) that the learning is something they remember.     What an amazing project! I watched the video first and then read your description of the project. The music that this student created is amazing! 

    It is really interesting to see what kids can create with a project like this, and it gets them to think about the bigger picture when learning about immigration. They also love creating using applications.
