    The Sioux War, (also called the Dakota Conflict, Uprising or Massacre) is not widely known about beyond Minnesota, but the lasting impact is still remembered and honored. The conflict occurred largely in southwestern Minnesota and followed a period of poor crops and limited food for the Dakota Sioux who faced a lack of help from traders or the government. At the end of the war 38 indigenous people were hung. The  number would have been much higher if President Lincoln had not stepped in.

    Recognition of the 38 is marked by a healing ride from central South Dakota to Mankato annually, arriving at the site of the mass execution on December 26.  For more see http://www.smoothfeather.com/dakota38
